New Leadership Takes the Helm of the Custom Builder & Remodelers Council
New Leadership for the Council
The Remodelers Council is back at the Northern Colorado Home Builders Association, and this time it has a new addition: the custom builders segment. At its latest meeting, the newly named Custom Builder & Remodelers Council officially voted in Noah Hutchison of Hutch Design Build as chair and Keilen Shigematsu of Richards Building Supply as co-chair.
Custom builders and remodelers face a unique set of challenges and opportunities, from one-of-a-kind client projects to working in and around existing homes. Bringing these groups together under one council is part of the HBA's ongoing commitment to adding value for its builder members, and the association is proud to continue that work.
Peers, Not Competitors
The council's goal is simple: give builders and remodelers a space to come together as peers rather than competitors, and help each other's businesses grow. Members share what's working, what isn't and what they've learned the hard way.
Just as important, the council is about building a base of trusted friends. When a project goes sideways or a tough business decision comes up, members have people they can call for honest advice, experience and perspective from someone who has been there.
That's not just a nice idea. Members of the original Remodelers Council have said they would not be in business today if it weren't for the education and relationships they built through the council. The new leadership hopes to carry that legacy forward for a new group of custom builders and remodelers.
New Faces and a National Perspective
The meeting welcomed several new faces, including Elliot Pike, chair of the NAHB Remodelers Council, who shared a look at where the remodeling industry stands nationally. A few highlights:
- Remodeling is holding steady. NAHB's Remodeling Market Index has stayed in the 60s over the past year, reading 62 in the third quarter of 2026. The West region, which includes Colorado, climbed to 56 from 48 the quarter before.
- Remodeling is outpacing new construction sentiment. Remodeler confidence continues to run ahead of both single-family and multifamily builder sentiment.
- Remodeling's share keeps growing. Improvement spending now makes up 45% of residential construction spending, up from 33% in 2007.
- Steady growth ahead. NAHB expects remodeling spending to hold flat in 2026, then grow about 2% a year in 2027 and 2028.
